Permission to Brag: An Obituary-Writing Workshop | May 12, 2026
$35.00

Obituaries range from dry and fact-filled to personality-driven summaries of extravagant lives. Whether inspiring or comedic or formal, they both inform the public of someone’s death and serve as lasting records of their lives.

Writing an obituary for someone else can be a daunting task, filled with the risk of leaving off someone or something important. It’s a kindness to, at a minimum, leave your loved ones with some guidance over what to include and what to leave out.

Hovering somewhere between a fact-gathering task list and a creative writing exercise, this workshop will include questions like:

  • What’s something you did that you’re proud of that you don’t talk about very much?

  • Who do you consider “family” and how would you describe them?

  • What about your background do you consider important?

  • Is there anything that you don’t want mentioned?

  • Who do you want reading your obituary? Where should it be posted?

You’ll come away with a guide for your loved ones that will be extremely useful whenever they eventually get tasked with writing your obituary. And you might just have fun getting permission to brag.
